Christmas and your Gut.

December 13, 2018

Well, we are right into Christmas party season now, and it is highly likely that a little bit of indulgence has started occurring. It is a great time to spend celebrating with friends and family but how do you want to feel at the other end?

Let me start by letting you know that we are giving away a Soda Stream just in time for Christmas so you can add bubbles to your favourite flavour of Gutsy and share it with the family or friends so they can also enjoy a delicious, refreshing drink that is good for them! Just go to our instagram page and follow the steps to enter.

Now, back to Christmas...I think we have all pulled up after an indulgent Christmas feeling bloated and sluggish. With the trap of endless amounts of delightful food it is easy to overeat. If all of these delicious foods were fresh fruit, vegetables and lean protein, then we probably would not have a problem. The problem lies in the fact that a lot of these indulgent foods are high in sugar and saturated fats, including all those sneaky drinks that come at this time of year.

Unfortunately, we all have very diverse microbiota (the mix of good and bad bacteria) in our gut and although someone sitting next to you seems to be able to get away with eating whatever they like, a lot of us can’t. These are the lucky few that have been blessed with forming a beautiful microbiota over their lifetime. There is a stack of factors that impact how our microbiota evolves and some of them you are not in control of like inheriting them from your mother etc.

Luckily there are things we can do that will definitely provide positive results. Obviously diet plays a huge role but there are other factors like exercise, sleep, stress, antibiotics and contact with mother earth that all have an impact and we need to try and improve all these things a bit where possible. Unless you have a severe gut condition or you have just taken a round of antibiotics (these wipe out good and bad bacteria) it is unlikely that you need to take a high potency, broad-spectrum probiotic (there is definitely a time and a place for these). Just little changes can help improve our gut life.

So what has all this got to do with Christmas? Well, all of those nasty bacteria that not only make us store fat but also make us want to eat more and more, thrive on sugar and saturated fat. The more you put in, the more they multiply and the more messages they send to your brain asking for more, please. Have you ever noticed the cravings for sweet things getting stronger and stronger the more nights you have a cheeky chocolate or two?

So do we cut it all out and eat Kale for Christmas? Probably not, that would not be much fun at all, and if you have children, they may disown you. It is all about finding a happy balance as well as maybe a couple of substitutes that can be enjoyed along the way. Gutsy Probiotic Drink Sachets just may be that substitute you have been looking for. With a 600ml bottle of soft drink having up to 70g of sugar (270 calories or almost 2 hours of walking) it is a no-brainer to whip up some delicious Gutsy bubbly water with no added sugar and at a meagre 16 calories per litre. The Lemon Lime makes an amazing lemonade the whole family will love. I should mention that the bacteria we use in Gutsy is also fantastic at displacing the bad bacteria in our gut so if we are not giving them sugar and pushing them out of their home they don’t have much of a chance at survival.

So think about what you are putting in this Christmas and make it a whole lot easier to reach that new year’s resolution of looking and feeling great in January without having to go to the gym 10 times a week. Oh, and did I mention that we were giving away a Sodastream to make all of this just a little bit easier, enter now. Next jump online and get some Christmas Gutsy and remember it is a time for sharing so make up some bottles and keep them in the fridge for when the friends, family, children need some guilt-free and good for you refreshment.

Merry Christmas!
