Why is Gutsy so good?

September 7, 2018

We have a lot of people asking why our drinks are good for them and it is a really great question. We love to provide as much information as possible when answering this but there is a short and long answer and it depends on how much detail you are looking for.

The short answer:

Gutsy Probiotic Sachets contain probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that exist naturally in our gut and provide us with healthy digestion and immune function. By taking probiotics we are introducing more of these beneficial bacteria to boost the numbers in the existing microbiota (the community of existing bacteria in our gut, good and bad).

Prebiotics are just dietary fibre that we cannot digest but feed the bacteria in our gut. If we do not have enough of this in our diet then our microbiome can suffer as there is nothing to sustain it, just the same as us not getting enough nutrients.

The long answer:

As above but here is some more detailed information about the functional ingredients in Gutsy:

Gutsy Probiotics:

  • 1 Billion Lactobacillus Plantarum

  • 1 Billion Bifidobacterium Longum

Gutsy Prebiotics:

  • Inulin - In the Lemon Lime and Coconut

  • FOS (fructooligosaccharides) - In the Elderberry

Lactobacillus Plantarum

L.Plantarum is a Gram positive lactic acid bacterium that is commonly found in a range of fermented foods including kimchi, sauerkraut and pickles. It has very high tolerance of stomach acid meaning the large majority that you consume makes it all the way through your digestive tract.

L.Plantarum has a long long list of possible health benefits and has been involved in many studies. These benefits at a high level are improvement of digestion, improvement of immunity and improvement of overall health. At a lower level these include reduction in anxiety, lowering of blood pressure, combating allergies and cancer, as well as anti-inflammatory, antiobesity and antidiabetic properties.

One of the most prominent benefits of L.Plantarum is the ability to keep pathogens at bay. It not only targets and kills pathogenic bacteria within the gut but it also restricts the pathogens from penetrating your gut lining and entering the bloodstream.

L.Plantarum is one of the best probiotics for treating digestive stress, has a long list of studied benefits and is also resistant to most antibiotics, which is why we chose it to be one of our Gutsy hero’s.

Bifidobacterium Longum

B.Longum is one of the first species of bacteria to colonise our gut after we are born and then appears to be present for our entire existence. It is reasonably tolerant of stomach acid providing for safe travel to our gut and can be commonly found in fermented foods.

B.Longum also comes with a long list of potential benefits within our body with its strength being in boosting immunity and combating infection. It has also been studied for relieving inflammation and allergies, being beneficial for coeliacs disease and high cholesterol, alleviating anxiety and depression as well as being good for the skin, liver, lungs and bones.

One of the main weapons in B.Longum’s arsenal is it’s very strong antioxidative effects. It has been shown to be significantly better at promoting cell health and rejuvenation than the well known Lactobacillus Acidophilus.

B.Longum is unfortunately not as resistant to antibiotics as L.Plantarum but it is also excellent at reducing pathogens by creating an acidic environment in the gut through the generation of lactic acid bacteria. The generation of these lactic acids gives it the double role of digestive booster and pathogen inhibitor making it a powerhouse in the probiotic realm.
