No longer is turmeric only considered a yummy and colourful addition to your curry. Go to any trendy cafe these days and a turmeric latte will be on the menu. So what is so good about turmeric anyway?
Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, aids digestion and helps with weight loss. Studies have shown that it can help to prevent cancer, Alzheimer's and reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult for the body to absorb curcumin. But when mixed with pepper, it increases your body's ability to absorb it. Freshly ground pepper corns are best.
Below is a recipe for our fiery turmeric pep-me-up-shot!
100g red or yellow turmeric
1 large lemon peeled
2 tablespoons honey or to taste
750ml of water
Black peppercorns, freshly ground to taste
Cayenne pepper to taste, for some extra zing
Blend all the ingredients, besides the pepper, together.
Pour mixture through a sieve to strain, make sure you squeeze it down with a large spoon or ladle to get all the juice out.
Pour into glass, grind peppercorns and cayenne and then shot.
Store remaining mixture in a glass bottle in the fridge for your week’s supply. Enjoy first thing in the morning to pep up your day!
This colourful concoction can leave a stain, so make sure you rinse everything straight away. If you do forget to clean it and it leaves a bit of a stain, trusty vinegar with a bit of lemon is a great natural cleaning agent.
So don’t forget to order a side of pepper next time you order your turmeric latte.
